Functional Medicine Secrets to Safe Skin Care Products

You may have 45,990 unique chemical exposures from personal care products. Are they safe? The American woman uses 12 personal care products per day with 126 unique ingredients and men use 6, multiply that by 365 days per year and you have a large exposure that your liver and kidneys have to process. Your brain, hormone systems and nervous system have to cope with them as well. Cosmetics and personal care products are the least regulated products and not much attention is paid to health concerns from prolonged chemical exposure. After all, many people think their skin will not absorb these chemicals but they are wrong.

Your skin is a window into your health. It's not just a protective barrier against bacteria; it's the body's largest organ and it removes toxins through perspiration, regulates temperature, takes in oxygen and absorbs nutrients and medication. Almost everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream. Do you know what's in your products and if they're going to help or hurt you?

Here's a list of some common ingredients that studies show may be hazardous to your health.

  • Parabens, a family of synthetic preservatives, have been shown to be hormone disruptors and can not be broken down in the body. Parabens were found intact in breast cancer tissue and thought to come from applying skin care products. They mimic estrogen and can stimulate the estrogen receptors as if they were estrogen. Studies also showed that parabens interfered with detoxification, and androgen hormones such as testosterone and DHEA. They may also be toxic to genes. They are a family of compounds so look for anything that includes the word “paraben” in it such as butylparaben, parabens, isobutylparaben, sodium methylparaben, sodium propylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben and benzylparaben.
  • Sodium Laurel Sulfate is a skin irritant and is found in many products from toothpaste to shampoos and body washes. Products containing this may be contaminated with1,4 dioxane, a known cancer causing substance. 1,4-dioxane is a contaminant created when common ingredients are combined together and react to form the compound. Because of pressure from environmental groups, leading brand baby products companies will no longer contain two chemicals, formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane.
  • Phthalates and / or Fragrance: Phthalates are found in fragrance, toys, vinyl flooring and wall coverings as well as many personal care products such as nail polish, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, soaps, shampoos, and perfumes. Studies indicate that phthalates damages the male reproductive system, decreases male fertility and may be associated with breast cancer and increased risk of allergic illnesses. Pregnant women should avoid phthalate exposure as it may interfere with normal development and produce behavioral problems in boys.
  • BHA is used in food and cosmetics as an antioxidant that prevents fats from going rancid. Although it is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) in food, it has been shown to be a hormone disruptor and lowers thyroid hormone and testosterone, interferees with the development of the reproductive system and causes cancer in rodents and its health effects in humans are not clear. Since The National Toxicology Program classifies it as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” and the European Union bans its use in cosmetics and fragrance, why put it on your skin where it will be absorbed and add to your toxic load, when you are already getting it in prepared food?
  • Petroleum distillates: Propylene glycol, mineral oil, petroleum jelly and fragrances are extracted from petroleum, which may be contaminated with poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) that are known carcinogens. Theses can irritate skin, and in high doses can affect liver and kidney function. The European Union bans these chemicals from use in cosmetics without “the full refining history is known and it can be shown that the substance from which it is produced is not a carcinogen.”
  • Other – gluten, herbicides, and pesticides and other chemicals and substances can be absorbed through the skin.

There are many safe and natural products to take the place of these chemicals on your skin. Choose natural plant based products with ingredients that are organic, safe for your skin as well as the environment. Look for cold pressed oils, gluten free, free of the chemicals listed above, compliance with European Union Cosmetics Directive, and be sure they are made in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Process) facility.

Healthy and Safe Ingredients:

  • Cleansing include honey propolis, hazelnut oil, and shea butter
  • Antioxidants in the form of extracts of fruit, green tea, oiive leaf, rosemary and aloe
  • Moisturizer with sunflower, jojoba, sea buckhorn oil and / or shea butter and adaptogenic herbs such as astralgus, elutherococcus, Panax ginseng, schizandra and rosemary

A good rule of thumb is do not use anything on your skin that you would not put in your mouth. This will reduce your toxic load and your liver will love you. It will be reflected in vibrant health and clear glowing skin.

Improve Your Poor Diet And Pore Cleansing To Get Radiant Skin

Spring is only just around the corner now (thank goodness) and like a lot of people the lighter meals of spring and summer are looking more and more inviting. After weeks of slow cooked casseroles and heavier meals, facial skin in particular is beginning to show the lack of fresh red fruit loaded with skin-friendly anti-oxidants and vitamin C.

The two fastest ways you'll see an improvement in your skin is with diet and a deep pore cleaning brush, one works from the inside outwards and the other works on polishing the outside.

Absolutely nothing bar a spa treatment will get skin as clean as a facial cleaning brush. You can use all the expensive lotions and potions but without the skin underneath is clean and bacteria free, the spots and dull looking skin will persist.

Do you recall how you did not need a fancy new electric toothbrush? Well it's the same with facial cleaning brushes, once used you'll be hooked and so will your skin.

You can get either battery operated brushes where you replace the batteries every few weeks or a rechargeable electric model which comes with a charging unit pretty much like a razor.

Obviously the battery models lack the power of their electric cousins, they almost all either rotate the brush or vibrate instead of the more sophisticated oscillation movement given with higher powered models, such as the well known Clarisonic.

Do not be put off like some folks are by the few spots which often appear when you first start taking care of your skin properly. These are not a rash, and unless they itch like crazy and spread, you do not have an allergy. More likely is your skin is clean enough to encourage existing bacteria to come to the surface which it does in the form of a spot. Keep on with the brush and within a week or three, they'll stop.

If you want to glow from the inside out and make permanent positive changes to your skin's overall condition, then change your diet to incorporate plenty of dark skinned fresh fruit and cut out some of the fried fatty food and meat.

Skin needs a complex balance of vitamins best obtained from a well balanced diet, but super anti-oxidant rich fruits are a great place to start! Fruits like strawberries, blueberries and plumbs are just a few of the high producing anti-oxidant options, anything with red to dark red skin is going to be full of it.

I know a lot of people drink extra water to hydrate their skin. Why bother?

It's a complete old wives tale that any amount of extra water is going to help without your diet is good enough to keep cell walls strong, because it's these that hold fluid in and if they are weak, they leak it away faster than you can drink it.

Science Wins This One

Yes, drinking water will help flush toxins through your body and is good for you in 101 other ways, but as far as skin looking radiant and glowing, science wins here over glib advice. Dietary changes are the only thing that'll repair and strengthen your microscopic water towers to keep any fluid in, and skin looking plump – so get eating them tasty berries!

These walls weaken as we age, so a good diet becomes even more important for healthy glowing skin.

If you put the regular use of a facial cleansing brush together with even just a few dietary improvements, within a week or two people will be telling you how well you look. They will not know what it is about you that changed, but you will get noticed.

Do not worry, we'll keep it our little secret.

A Cellulite Cure – How to Get Rid of Cellulite

Are you a middle-aged woman? Then there is a good chance that you may be affected by cellulite. If not then you are among the minority, as most women in their 40's, 50's and 60's have cellulite deposits in their body. This does not mean that cellulite is not found among young girls or guys. They are also affected by this problem, but the proportion is much less.

Now let us know what cellulite is. The distasteful condition benefit the skin is referred to as cellulite. This condition gives an orange-peel like appearance to the tissues of the affected area. You will have cellulite mostly in the lower portion of the body (hips, thighs etc), but it is also quite common in the upper arms and the breasts. People have some vague ideas about cellulite. The majority thinks that cellulite disturbs only the fat individuals, but the fact is different. Sporty women without any additional body weight may also be affected by cellulite.

Now you know what cellulite is. But the most important part ie the answer to 'how to get rid of cellulite' is till missing. Let us discuss it in brief.

The Natural Procedures

A combination of balanced diet and proper exercising schedule can help you to get rid of cellulite. Consult a dietitian and arrange an anti-cellulite diet chart. These diets generally contain a lot of fibers and vitamins and omit all the toxins like sugar, tea, coffee carbonated drinks etc. The diet should not include a higher percentage of fat.

Exercising also sometimes helps in reducing cellulite. This process helps a lot as it boosts the blood circulation restores the subcutaneous lipid layer. But exercises mean for cellulite reduction are quite hard to perform. You will have to work out for hours in the gym to achieve the desired results.

The most important thing about doing cellulite reducing exercises is concentrating on the parts affected by cellulite. Some of the most common parts are thighs, upper arms, hips, and breasts. The aerobic exercises are the best cure for the cellulite. These exercises increase the heart rate and help you to burn a lot of calories.

If you can follow this chart along with regular aerobic exercises, reducing the cellulite deposits will not be a problem for you anymore. The best thing about this combination is that it is entirely natural and beneficial if performed under the supervision of experts.

The Artificial Procedures

The primary artificial method adapted for getting rid of cellulite is the laser treatment. This treatment is done using the laser rays and is considered as the most effective cure of cellulite. You will not have to worry about the outcome of this operation as it involves negligible risk. Another artificial method is the treatment done by means of radio waves. This is also very effective for eliminating cellulite deposits, but not as much as the laser treatment.

Skincare Products Are More Than Skin Deep – Part 1

The skin is the largest organ in our bodies. Ingredients in products that are applied to its surface may penetrate through to the small blood vessels located just below, historically circulating through the entire body. Just as vitamins and minerals can enter our bodies in this way, so too can harmful materials. Skincare products are something most people use daily, which magnifies the potential for exposure to any harmful ingredients. This is especially true for children – the ratio of their skin surface area to their body volume is higher than for adults, meaning any harmful chemical applied to the skin, once inside the body, will have a more significant impact.

As parents, we want our kids to live happy, healthy, worry-free lives. To most moms, that means getting the best of everything for their little angels. When it comes to skin protection, cleaning, and caring, this means using premium baby skincare products.

What separates a premium skincare product from the rest? The primary definition would be of a product that contains only healthy and safe ingredients, and is therefore free of any skin irritants or harmful ingredients. Some of these potential irritants, allergens or safety-related chemicals, which appear quite frequently in several baby skincare products currently on the market, include the following:

  • Fragrances (perfumes)
  • MI / MCI
  • Parabens
  • SLS / SLES
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates

In part one of this series, our discussion focuses on fragrances.

Why should premium baby skincare products be fragrance free (unscented)?

Fragrance formulas are considered trade secrets and their components are not disclosed on labels. Fragrance has been incrementally cited as a trigger in health conditions such as asthma, allergies and migraine headaches [ref1]. Furthermore, some fragrance substances have been found to accumulate in adipose tissue and are present in breast milk [ref2].

We are exposed to many scented (fragrance-containing) products or materials on daily basis, such as toiletries, skincare, household, laundry products, or certain packaging materials, etc. These products are one of the sources of chemicals that have a diverse spectrum of health effects, such as endocrine disruption. Endocrine disabling compounds (EDCs) are chemicals that can alter hormonal signaling, influence our metabolism, affect nervous and reproductive system development.

Just having a “synthetic fragrance free” product may not be enough for those with sensitive skin, or certain skin problems such as eczema, hives, contact dermatitis, or other types of dermatitis. Natural scents (fragrances) from flowers and plants, including certain essential oils, could potentially lead to skin sensitization or an adverse reaction, as they may contain skin irritants or skin sensitizing materials. In this case, being natural or organic does not guarantee it's gentle on your skin; in fact, it could cause allergic reactions or trigger a flare up of a preexisting condition. For use on babies or anyone else with sensitive skin, we always suggest unscented skincare products.

The Many Causes of Dry Skin and Useful Suggestions

Dry skin comes about when the outer layer of the skin is lacking the right amount of water. While the skin is moistened, it helps to hold water within it and sets up a barrier to protect against external irritants, contaminants, and bacteria. Whenever the outer layer of the skin dries out, the protective abilities are decreed and large amounts of water dehydrate, causing the skin to be more vulnerable to external forces.

Normally, water evaporation from the skin is so slow that there is plenty of time to replenish the body's water requirements. When water reduction is higher than the amount being replaced, the symptoms of dry skin will manifest.

Dry skin must be taken seriously . Chronic dry skin can result in additional problems like swelling and contamination. Dry skin may also be the consequence of various other skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or dermatitis. Many instances of dry skin can usually be treated by using moisturizers and creams rich is organic compounds such as MSM, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin A, and Ayurvedic herbs. However, if dry skin continues following your own personal solutions, then expert medical attention is necessary.

The best way to treat a problem is to prevent it from happening. Below are the most commonly stated reasons for the development of dry skin.

  • Aging: As we get older, the flow of blood and the ability to generate oil and greasy compounds fades. Cell restoration is also sluggish and the skin additionally will become thinner. All of this causes water content to minimize and makes it more difficult to maintain natural oils and moisture.
  • Hot, Dry Air: The hot, dry air in desert environments may also result in dryness. Regardless of whether you stay in a hot and dry environment or stuck in a hot and humid area, the use of air conditioning is normal. Air conditioning units eliminate the water from the atmosphere creating a dry setting which also plays a role in dry skin.
  • Cold Temperatures: Cold and dry wintertime air is another frequent cause. The coldness and dampness of winter strips the skin of the protective oils, leaving it dry and chapped.
  • Prolonged Sun Exposure: The warmthrought on by the sun, much like any kind of heat, will cause dryness. However, the ultraviolet rays from the sun will cause harm to the skin underneath the outer layer, wearing down collagen and elasticity of the muscles which results in drooping and wrinkly skin.
  • Unhealthy Diet: A bad diet without any fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and grains may cause vitamin insufficiency that lead to poor skin conditions. Consuming fried meals, alcoholic beverages, and caffeine drinks all maximize the dryness of the skin.
  • Insomnia: Whenever we sleep at night the body fixes itself. Not getting enough sleep lessens the amount of time required for skin cells to repair themselves which can lead to a poor and dull-looking appearance.

Several tips to minimize dry skin include:

  • Make use of mild organic soaps with includes fats, natural oils, and moisturizing agents.
  • Olive oil based soaps are believed to be the best for your skin.
  • Get a great deal of physical exercise and rest.
  • A balanced and healthy diet abundant with fibers, omega 3 essential fatty acids (fish oils), and antioxidants which you can get from all types of berries and olive oil.
  • The utilization of a humidifier to re-supply water in the air which is taken out by air conditioning units.
  • Wear clothes produced from all-natural fibers like cotton and silk to help your skin breath significantly better.
  • Use of moisturizers and MSM-based creams.

Have You Damaged Your Skin Today?

With today's endless supply of facial products and tools – creams, lotions, serums, buffers, exfoliators, washes, masks, peels, skin care services, etc. – it has become increasingly difficult to know what to do to keep our skin healthy. Many people misuse and abuse products, or they simply do not know how to use them. Here are a few missteps that many people take in an effort to get flawless skin.

Not Staying Hydrated

We are made up of mostly water, so it would make sense that our skin craves water as well. If you've ever been dehydrated, you may notice that your eyes look more sunken, your hands are dry and less supple, and your lips have cracked. Water works from the inside out, so get your 8 glasses a day, every day!

Rebuking Moisturizer

For some people with combination or oily skin, adding a moisturizer to their regimen may seem like a capital offset leading to imminent disaster. However if you are washing your face on a regular basis, moisturizer should be an essential part of your day. Washing removals our facial sebum, the natural oils that condition and protect our skin. If you do not replenish these oils, your face will overcompensate, starting a vicious cycle of dryness and oiliness.

Exfoliating Too Often

An exfoliating skin care treatment, at home or at a medical spa, can be a healthy, refreshing addition to your skin treatments. It sloughs off dead skin and gently polishes away deep grime. Over-exfoliating, however, can cause micro-tears in the sensitive surface of our facial skin, causing scarring over time and sometimes even rashes and allergic reactions. Always be gentle, or see a professional no more than once a week.

Avoiding Oil

This is related to the moisturizer tip. Many people think that putting oil on their face is equal to slathering on the pimples. While some oils do clog pores and can cause breakouts, this is simply not true for many other oils. Some, like tea tree oil, even serve to reduce breakouts and balance our skin's texture. Almond oil is a great gentle moisturizer that is also non-comedogenic. Apply the oils right after a shower, while your face is still damp, so that they will soak in and any excess will evaporate.

Catching Too Many Rays

It is tempting in the summer to lay outside getting a great tan, and it is always important to get your vitamin D, but the sun's radiation can easily and quickly do more harm than good. You may not be so grateful for your tanned skin when you get older and develop leather skin, premature wrinkles, and age spots. This tip goes for personal skin care services for your entire body. Rub in that SPF 30 and be sure to re-apply every couple of hours during sun exposure.

These are just a few tips for skin care services that can quickly and easily bring out your skin's natural glow. We all make mistakes sometimes, but it is important to know what you should be doing to help your skin remain as healthy as possible.

Natural Skincare, Why Natural Is Better

Today all sorts of natural and organic beauty products are showing up on the store shelves and online. It may seem like a passing fad but, rest assured, organic is here to stay. The reason they are here to stay is because they are better. Natural and organic products do much more for your skin and body than chemical filled products. They are gentle on the skin and the environment; best of all, they work. No fillers or chemicals will be found in any organic beauty product. They are made with the highest quality ingredients to give you the best results.

There are many other reasons organic products are better.

1. No Fillers – With natural and organic items, no fillers are involved. So often, companies fill their beauty products with cheap fillers such as mineral oil and petroleum. These fillers sit on top of the skin and make the product ineffective at moisturizing. Natural beauty products have no fillers because they are made with only ingredients the product needs, making them more effective at what they do best. If you can not name every product in the ingredients list, it is best to leave it on the shelf.

2. Need Less Product – Because there are no fillers, less of the product is needed to get the results you want. Natural and organic products are more concentrated, so you will use less product and it will last a longer period of time. By using less product, you are saving money and less waste will go into the trash.

3. Healthier Products – Natural and organic beauty products have no parabens, no sulfates, no propylene glycol, and no other ingredients that may cause harm. Some of these products have been linked to cancer and are skin irritants. There is no cancer or skin irritant risk with natural beauty products.

4. More Sustainable – Most organic products provide benefits to the environment by reusing and recycling. Companies with natural and organic products more often have green business practices as well. They also provide benefits to public healthy by using raw resources until their final disposal. Many top companies of natural and organic beauty products donate to charities every year.

5. They Work Better – Our bodies are accredited to what the earth provides. Once we start putting chemicals into our bodies, our bodies try to fight them. This can cause irritation of the skin. By using organic and natural products, they work in balance with our bodies, instead of against it. Only top natural ingredients go into organic products, because natural is what is best for your skin.

Natural and organic beauty products are better for your skin and the environment. The product, your skin, and the environment all work together. When using beauty products with chemicals in them, most of the time, they are working against your skin. This makes them ineffective and harsh. Natural products work with your skin to give you healthier, clearer, and cleaner skin.

Why Is It Necessary To Consult With A Skin Care Expert?

Most of us have a habit of self medication when it comes to issues related to our skin. We find out the ways which we think are best for us- to cure a skin infection or to enhance the beauty or suppleness of our own skin. While sometimes these methods work for us but the chances that you could end up damaging your skin are more reliably.

It is always advisable to consult a skin care expert when it comes to these problems.

Either it is an infection that you are trying to cure or you are just looking for an effective way leading to radiant and healthy skin, the best thing to do is to consult a specialist.

Here are a few reasons as to why you might want to take the help of a certified dermatologist.

Taking care of your personalized needs:

Each one of us has a different skin type and different allergies. For instance it is not necessary what worked for your friend when she had that bad acne would treat your acne as well. So the most intelligent thing to do is to consult a specialist who will identify your skin's needs and will treat you accordingly.

Self medication must be best avoided as there are times when it could worsen the situation and you can suffer adverse effects.

Avoiding potential fatal diseases:

If you see a dark discoloration or an unusual, abnormal mole developing on your skin you must see a specialist as soon as possible. There are chances that it is a harmless innocent little mole but then again it could be skin cancer slowly spreading over.

Regular check ups and appointments with your skin doctor would enable you to identify the symptoms of any such disease and take necessary actions accordingly.

The right products and treatment:

Skin specialists help you to find out the best product according to your skin. They identify your skin type, your allergies and often provide you with well formulated products suitable to your skin type. This will not only put an end to your skin issues but also bless you with a healthy and fresh skin. They go through your medical history and come up with the solutions that are best for you; it could be a particular medicine, or even a home remedy.

Knowing the right make up products:

Skin care experts or dermatologists help you identify the product that caused the itching problem or the red rashes that you developed on your face.

Sometimes make up products affect us in adverse ways and we do not even come to know about it until it's too late!

In the worst cases, even after we have stopped the use of the particular products the irritation does not cease for days. So to avoid unpleasant situations like these it is always fruitful to consult a skin specialist before hand only to know the right make up products for your skin.

These are only a few advantages among many that you enjoy when you consult a skin care expert on a regular basis. Do not wait for a problem to arise to see a doctor. They make sure you get the right treatment for your disease as well as your skin remains healthy, beautiful and young for many days to come. Consult a skin care expert today, give your skin the attention it describes.

Get Rid Of Age Spots – 3 Easy Solutions To Try At Home Now

Age spots have many causes. Excessive tanning or a job where we need to be out in the sun a lot is a big reason, but also just genes and generally aging can bring age spots to your face, hands and body. These discolorations of the skin are not the prettiest sight, so it's understandable that many people want to get rid of age spots – and the quicker the better! Many take drastic measures and turn to chemical peels or dermabrasion treatments, but it is possible to eliminate age spots naturally with home remedies and special skin creams.

• Aloe Vera : This plant is a real package of healing goodness! Among many other things, it can also help eliminate age spots. When you break open the stem of an aloe vera leaf you will notice the inside is filled with a gel substance. If you apply the gel to your spots once or twice a day you will see a significant difference in your brown spots within a month or so. Fresh lemon juice has the same effect by the way, you can use it with the same method as aloe vera.

• Buttermilk : this method is not so well known but very effective. In fact it has been used for centuries by people trying to get rid of age spots. You simply dab it onto your skin and let it dry for about 30 minutes. Then all you have to do is to rinse it off with warm water. Do this every day for a couple of months and your brown spots are likely to lighten.

• Another way you can eliminate age spots with is to make your own facial mask . Combine a teaspoon of honey with a teaspoon of plain yogurt. Apply this mixture to your face and leave it on for about 30 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. If you do this daily for about a month you should see your brown spots slowly fade away.

These natural remedies have been proven to be effective over centuries. However, you must be realistic. It will take time to see results. If you want quicker results you should look into commercial skin skin care designed to lighten age spots and skin coloration. These products – if they are completely natural – are not harmful to the skin but contain ingredients that are really effective, such as extrapone nutgrass. Often they will also have other anti aging properties and nourish your skin as well.

Why You Should Always Use Unscented Lotion After Shaving

I have never liked to shave because it has always seen something that was time consuming and annoying. However my wife prefers me without a beard and I would rather keep her happy than grow hair on my face. This is of course not a new problem, but one that mankind has been dealing with for many thousands of years. With improvements of metal blades and lubrication for the face we have managed to reduce the two leading causes of razor burn. I do not want to think about shaving before theseventions because there is probably a good reason everyone had a facial hair and long bears in the past.

The newest product in the world of skin care for men is aftershave. If you are like me it is something that your father or grandmother used. Early aftershave from the 1980s was a man splashing a fragrant alcohol-based formula on his freshly shaven face covered with the tiny little cuts. This of course made it sting as the alcohol got into any cuts on your face. Aftershave served its purpose of helping your face heal. Razors make cuts and aftershave cleans the skin and helps to protect those cuts from getting infected. However, alcohol dries the skin and in today's world is not a bad thing to avoid putting on your face if you have sensitive skin.

Many aftershaves these days are marked to men as a fragrance product like perfumes are to women. Most fragrances are made up of synthetic chemicals. Synthetic ingredients are used in the majority of skincare products because they are almost always cheaper than natural ingredients and they help the product last longer on the shelf. Not all of them are harmful, but since what you put on your skin is absorbed through the skin, not to mention cuts on your face, it looks like a good idea to be careful with any you put on your skin and especially your face. Fragrances do not even help with shelf life and are often made from toxic chemicals.

If your product requires a fragrance to be added to make it smell good then you should definitely be questioning the ingredients. Instead look for natural ingredients like essential oils that are all-natural, scented oils extracted from plants. Types of essential oils commonly found in body products include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree oils.

In conclusion the best choice is to avoid products with a fragrance and go with unscented lotion or aftershave. Now that you know the reasons you can make an informed decision. If you want to learn more about the skin care products I recommend then please visit my website.

What Are Cold Sores And How Are They Treated?

If you find clusters of little blisters on your lip and around the mouth, those may be cold sores, also known as fever blisters. Generally, the skin around the blisters can feel sore and look inflamed. They often break open, ooze a clear fluid, and then form a scab. Although they usually vanish in several days to two weeks, they can be unpleasant and be a source of embarrassment for many people.

Why do I have cold sores?

Cold sores are due to the herpes simplex virus or HSV. There are two kinds of HSV, and these are HSV-1, which is responsible for it, and HSV-2, which causes genital herpes. Either kind, however, can create sores on the face or the genitals. The HSV gains access to the body via a break in the skin around or inside the mouth.

What symptoms can I expect?

There are times when people have the virus but do not show any symptoms, but they can still be contagious to others. For people who do have symptoms, they usually go through several stages. It will start as a burning sensation around their lips for a few days before the sore blisters crop up. The blisters contain fluid and they usually break after a few days. The small blisters may join together and then break, leaving shallow open sores which may ooze clear fluid. These sores will then crush over. Apart from the lesion, someone who has it may experience pain around the mouth and on the lips. Some also experience fever, a sore throat, or swollen glands in the neck or other parts of the body. Infants commonly drool before it appear.

Are cold sores contagious?

Yes, they are. They are spread via direct contact like when a person touches a fever blister through kissing. Oral sex can also transmit HSV-1 to the genitals and HSV-2 to the lips. It can also be contracted through indirect contact like when you share eating utensils, razors, and towels with someone who has an active lesion.

How to get rid of it

The HSV that produces cold sores can not be cured, but treatment can reduce their severity and frequency. There are various treatment options available for example creams, ointments, and sometimes even antiviral tablets or capsules. Generally speaking, oral medications are far better than creams. In extreme infections, antiviral drugs may be administered intravenously. These treatments will help eliminate your cold sores sooner and help less unsuccessful symptoms.

Advantages of Using Moisturizer

Everyone loves to have a beautiful and glowing skin. Skin moisturizer helps keep skin hydrated and prevent dryness. It acts as a barrier between the pores and the air molecules. This results water from leaving and maintaining the natural moisture of the skin. Moisturizer helps in terracing the dryness, protection, masking imperfections, improving skin texture as well as skin tone.

The use of moisturizer differs from texture to texture as well as according to the age of the particular individual.

Here are some guidelines to use moisturizer according to your skin type:

  • For Normal Type

It means people who have either oily nor dry skin. Maintenance of this type of balance is required; a person with a normal texture should use a water-based moisturizer which has non-greasy or light amount of moistening contents. In this type of moisturizers, light weights or silicon present is Cyclomethicone.

  • For Oily Type

This type is prone to acne and breakouts. Although skin is oily but it still needs moisturizer of lightweight moistening especially after using the acne prevention products as most of time these products prevent oils but also make the skin dry. Noncomedogenic labeled products or water based products should be used.

  • For Dry Type

Dry skin needs moisture; this texture needs heavy oil based moisturizers which help in the hydration of epidermis. Petroleum-based products are advised for cracked and dry skin. It is more powerful for preventing water in pores.

  • For Sensitive Type

Sensitive skin is allergic to irritations, rashes, redness and itching. The people with this type should use moisturizer which is soothing and contains ingredients such as aloe or chamomile. Make sure the moisturizer you are using should not contain any dye or fragrances. People with this skin type should avoid the product containing acids which can irritate the skin.

  • For Mature Type

Due to growing age oil producing glands become inactive and the skin tends to become dry. The moisturizer containing petrolatum as the base should be used as it helps in softening of skin and also helps maintain water in the pores. The skincare products containing alpha hydroxy acids and antioxidants should be used to overcome the wrinkles and sagging of skin. These key ingredients will help in holding moisture and will also prevent flaky and scaly skin.

Here are some tips on how to apply moisturizer more effectively:

  • Moisturizer should be applied immediately after bathing, it helps water to trap in the surface cells.
  • Moisturize hands and body amply;
  • Apply moisturizer after washing of hands and before exercising outside.

Benefits of using moisturizer in winters

In winters skin becomes dry, itchy, dehydrated and irritated. To make it hydrated and glowing again, one needs to use moisture along with the nutritional qualities of heavy oils. Apply winter moisturizer at night on face, hands and legs. The skin will absorb the moistening cream better at night and in the morning you will feel fresh and rejuvenated after you get up.

Application of moisturizer must be proper. Natural moisturizers should be preferred to the expensive brands. If you are noticing any type of skin problems after using moisturizer, then consult your dermatologist. He will guide you in moisturizing your skin according to the skin tone.

How Do You Get Rid Of Cellulite With Exercise?

If you are looking to get rid of cellulite using an exercise routine, you will first want to understand exactly what cellulite is.

First and foremost, cellulite is not a 'thing,' rather it is a word that is used to describe the appearance of the unattractive, dimply skin that is the result of fat pockets just under the layers of skin.

Cellulite forms more frequently in women than in men because of the way that the connective tissues connect in the layers of skin where fat is stored.

Difference Between Men's and Women's Skin

Women, as compared to men, have different hypdermal layers beneeth the skin where fat is stored. In women, the walls of the hypodermal layer are vertical (up and down) whereas the walls in men's skin are zig-zagged in fashion. This is why when the fat cells get larger in women's skin, there is more chance for stretching so that the fat pockets are more visible on the surface of the skin.

How Do You Get Rid of Cellulite With Exercise Then?

Since the fat cells in the hypodermal layer become larger, we need a method to target the muscles just below the skin in order to remove cellulite.

The cellulite can be removed with low repetition, gentle muscle stimulation. These types of exercises will be able to target the affected areas and not only tone the muscles, but tighten and lift the skin to make the appearance of cellulite disappear.

Doing your basic exercise machine routines, treadmill exercises, and elliptical machines will not get rid of cellulite! (However, you may still want to do these on occasion for the cardiovascular benefits.)

Instead, get your exercise routine going by doing 10 minutes of cardio, followed by some of these exercises, done by using your body weight and balance to target the affected areas:

1. Goblet or Dumbell Squats – These are deep squats done by holding a heavy weight. For the Goblet variety, hold the weight against your chest otherwise you can hold the dumbbells at your side. These should be done with at least 10 lbs. These will affect the glutes, hamstrings, and thighs.

2. Clock Lunges – Imagine the face of a clock. Now do lunges at 12 o'clock, then 3, 6, and 8 o'clock for the same leg. Then do the same for the other leg for about 3 sets of 15-20 reps.

These 2 exercises are just some of the many examples you can do when finding out the best way to get rid of cellulite with exercise.

The key is to target the affected areas and stop doing so much cardio! Let's get fit ladies!

Avoid The Sun Plus More Ways To Keep Younger Skin

There are billions of dollars each year on skin care products that promise to make you look younger by erasing wrinkles, lightening age spots, and eliminating itching or flaking. But the simplest and cheapest ways to keep your skin young looking and keeping your skin healthy is to avoid the sun. Sunlight is a major cause of the skin damage which leads to wrinkles, dryness and age spots.

Have you ever seen an older person who has worked outside all their life? Or have you seen some of the old pictures of the cowboys who sent their life outside and in the sun? If you want to find a person that has a ton of wrinkles then that really is the place to look. Your old Native American pictures who showed people who had once again lived outside all their life in the sun and elements all show people who have lots of wrinkles.

Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called collagen and elastin. The breakdown of elastin causes the skin to lose its ability to snap back after stretching. The breakdown of collagen causes the skin to lose its ability to hold its firmness and leads to sagging. As a result, wrinkles form and gravity pulls the skin and causes it to sag. This is most noticeable on the face, neck, and upper arms and really contributes to looking older.

The solution of course is to avoid the sun and when the sun can not be avoided wear sunscreen.

Smoking cigarettes also contributes to wrinkles. The reason for this difference is not clear. It may be because smoking also plays a role in damaging elastin which leads to more wrinkles. Studies have shown that facial wrinkles increase with the amount of cigarettes and number of years a person has smoked.

Without trying to offending all the smokers, the obvious solution to this is to not smoke. I am thankful every day that I never started smoking because I know it is very difficult to stop smoking.

A company that provides my skincare products has discovered foods and supplements that will increase the natural growth of collagen and elastin in your skin. Their studies have shown that as you increase the collagen and elastin in the skin, the wrinkles in addition to that they use all natural ingredients and by that I mean their skin care products are safe enough to eat. However, because I have no idea about their taste, I can not recommend eating them.

However there are things that you eat that do affect your skin. When you recognize the fact that your skin is your largest organ body you have realized that what you eat affects your skin as well as the rest of your body. So what are some of the things you can eat that you might not have thought of?

Lactobacillus is bacterium found in foods that are fermented, like yogurt, but are commonly used in dietary supplements advertised a probiotics. Studies have shown some benefits linked to Lactobacillus and treating and / or preventing skin disorders such as eczema, fever blisters, and acne.

Water is also needed for skin health as well as overall body health. Dehydration is often as simple as lack of water consumption so make sure to keep yourself hydrated. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Dehydration causes stress and stress causes further dehydration. To make it even worse they say that stress also causes dry skin. Being well-hydrated is important to your physical and mental health so it is not just dry skin that you are trying to avoid.

Fish oil has omega-3 fatty acids that have also been linked to benefits to the skin. Their benefits to heart health and brain health are better known, but EPA, one of the three fatty acids, greatly benefits skin by regulating oil production to boost hydration and prevent acne, and by delaying the skins aging process to stave off wrinkles. Most of us do not get enough omega-3s in our diets so supplements here can also help your health and your skin.

So as you can see, there are simple things that you can do to keep your skin looking young. If you visit my website you can learn more about the company I use for skincare products and their products have ingredients that studies have shown can actually remove wrinkles. But simple things like dietary supplements and drinking enough water can make a difference. It does not always have to be hard. Check out my website below to learn more.
